Bungo Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 just got this and may be the gang can give me some idea...... large wak size . Hammer work on surface, some bones on mimi, iron " feels/looks " hard like tosho/saotome works. All the sukashi have been plugged with shakudo ( quite high quality, nice black with a purple/silver sheen ). Have a wabi feeling ( but that's subjective.... ) age? school ? I feel this is early work ..... milt Quote
Henry Wilson Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 A shakudo filling depicting a rain drop (top circle) and puddles of water. It could be a motif that represents spring showers with the top left depicting new plants. Could it be mid Edo Saotome? All above is just a guess Quote
Bungo Posted September 9, 2008 Author Report Posted September 9, 2008 henry, actually , according to the seller, the sukashi to the right is a woman in kimono, the " triangle ' shape may be a bird ( a giant one at that ). The left is kiku petals, the kozuka hitsu-ana is just that, not a palm tree, And thanks to Brian das despot for changing the avitar ( spelling ? ) for me. milt Quote
Nobody Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 actually , according to the seller, the sukashi to the right is a woman in kimono, the " triangle ' shape may be a bird ( a giant one at that ). The right figure including the triangle could look a woman, if it is said to be a woman. Quote

Bungo Posted September 10, 2008 Author Report Posted September 10, 2008 Here's a new one ............... age? School ? milt Quote
Brian Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 Milt, That second one is quite bizarre. The base tsuba itself looks quite good and well done, but the gold work looks almost cartoonish? Very odd to my novice eyes. Brian Quote
Bungo Posted September 10, 2008 Author Report Posted September 10, 2008 LOL, like the critters couldn't decide if they want to be octopus or lobster or shrimp ? Come on, guess age/school !! milt Quote
Martin Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 Hmmm, the Kogai-Hitsu looks early (pre Edo) to me, whereas the motive not.... How was the gold applied to the surface Milt? Nunome, Suritukezogan (metal inlayed by pressing into a thin carved line) or maybe just paint? Pictures are too small to tell. I would guess this is a Ko-Kinko pre Edo Tsuba with the Kozuka Hitsu widened at a later point in time. Best, Quote
Bungo Posted September 11, 2008 Author Report Posted September 11, 2008 According to the shinsa paper, Martin is spot on milt Quote

Also question on the shakudo ground........not exactly " nanako ", is it ? milt Quote
Martin Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 It´s a type of Ishime-Ji (stone surface), maybe ocean sand/surface in this case... Have a look here too: http://www.nihontokanjipages.com/forum/ ... .php?id=65 Quote
Bungo Posted September 19, 2008 Author Report Posted September 19, 2008 that's what I thought....... the shinsa paper described it as " nanako " but may be my reading of it is incorrect ? milt Quote
