Dean1981 Posted September 10, 2019 Report Posted September 10, 2019 Firstly Hi My name is Dean and I’ve recently started studying Japanese swords and ww2 history of the Japanese army. I’ve been studying USMC for 18 years now and have moved onto the Japanese collectibles, and vet bring backs. So I picked these 3 items up from a gentleman in America, these where vet bring backs that had been taken in the field and the swords adjusted etc to use. The yari spear however has not been altered, apart from length that I can see and has some writing on the front. I didn’t pay a lot for these and liked the fact they where actually used in WW2 and where adjusted in the field. I would really like help with the yari spear as the Blade is just gorgeous and so well made in my opinion Here it is Is there any other photos you would like of it also Thanks Dean Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted September 10, 2019 Report Posted September 10, 2019 I'd guess shirasaya text is 直大身槍 - 相州住助広 (old hiro kanji). I'll have to hurry to work but I can try to take a second look in the evening. 1 Quote

PNSSHOGUN Posted September 10, 2019 Report Posted September 10, 2019 The third sword has a very rare and unusual back strap that was field made by the soldier. 1 Quote
Dean1981 Posted September 10, 2019 Author Report Posted September 10, 2019 The third sword has a very rare and unusual back strap that was field made by the soldier. I thought it was a rarity, it’s field made and I’ve seen period photos of Japanese soldiers wearing there swords on their backs. Guessing this is what would have been fashioned. Thanks for the info Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted September 10, 2019 Report Posted September 10, 2019 It's quite unusual really, if 100% original. Along with back strap it has a fairly rare cloth cover and a Navy Kai Gunto handle with a missing tsuba. You might get some more attention from them in the military swords section. Quote

ROKUJURO Posted September 10, 2019 Report Posted September 10, 2019 Dean, welcome to the NM board! You can keep up the quality of the YARI (or any Japanese blade) by NEVER EVER touching the polished parts with your bare hands! In case you want to show us the NAKAGO of the swords: Japanese script on these arms is usually shown tip-up to facilitate reading. Quote
Ray Singer Posted September 10, 2019 Report Posted September 10, 2019 As Jussi indicated, your yari sayagaki indicates that the blade is by Soshu ju Sukehiro - 相州住助廣. Here is a link for care & maintenance: http://www.nbthk-ab.org/swordcare.pdf Quote
