Tom,

BIZEN OSAFUNE TADAMITSU: it looks like ANSEI period (1854), so SHIN-SHINTO. Four MEKUGI-ANA (no plural in Japanese nouns!) is quite special for such a "young" blade.

There are two dates on the nakago.

安政四年丁巳八月日 (Ansei 4 nen, Hinoto-Mi, 8 gatsu hi) – A day in the 8th month of 1857

文明五年八月日 (Bunmei 5 nen, 8 gatsu hi) – A day in the 8th month of 1473

Thankfully, MORIYAMA-SAN has provided the second date, which could mean that the blade is an UTSUSHI-MONO of a middle MUROMACHI TADAMITSU blade.

Might be interesting to see the whole blade in case you have pictures.

The Mei;

應需渡邊勘助源壽 – Accepting the order from Watanabe Kansuke Motohisa (reading?).

備州長舩忠光作 – Made by Tadamitsu in Osafune of Bishu.

於大X冨田Y仁彫 – Engraved by Tomita Yat X.
