I know that it can be difficult to tell if someone has the real thing or a repo from pics, but i have a chance to buy this at auction tomorrow and need some pro assistance on whether or not its worth buying, and possibly at what price. It has the "small" knife built into the sheath (see pics) so this may or may not be a big clue as to its origins, but I havent been able to figure it out. Really appreciate any input anyone may have. TY! Dear Bruce.

Run!  Run far and run fast!    While it is impossible to see anything of the blade from these photographs, other than the fact that the geometry is off, everything else is fake.

To get your eye in, as we say, take a good look at some of the stuff on here for example, https://www.aoijapan.com/  Other sites can be found i the links section at the top of the page.

All the best.

Hi Bruce,

Geraint is 100% correct; this sword is 100% wrong.  It is a relatively early fake and easy to spot.  There are many more recent fakes that are a lot closer to the real thing and until you know a lot more than you do now you should resist the urge to buy a sword and study.  Online study is fine but nothing is better than in hand, which you can do at any of the sword shows in the US (see the calendar on my website).  Think about getting some good books and reading them twice.  The more you know before you buy a sword, the happier you will be with your purchase.

Actually, it's usually pretty easy to tell if something is fake from pics. At least we still have that going for us :)
Mind you, the fakes are getting better all the time. But yours is still one of the obvious ones. Glad you asked before buying, unlike so many. There are always good deals in our for sale section if you are looking.
