raynor Posted May 5, 2019 Report Posted May 5, 2019 I've been wanting to add a pair of dragon menuki to my collection for a while and before I start look for pieces to purchase in the future I've set out on learning what I can on the symbolism and work. These two pieces do both seem to be shakudo with highlights, but am I correct in that the kenmakiryu pair to the right are cast? That or the strokes defining some of the scales appear quite soft. Other then that both pieces seem to be of a similar level of work with pherhaps an edge to the pair on the left. Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 5, 2019 Report Posted May 5, 2019 Right repro's. Left not only better quality, but, more appealing. Backs please? John Quote
raynor Posted May 5, 2019 Author Report Posted May 5, 2019 I agree, the right set looks more appealing, for my taste at least. Forgot the backs, apologies Quote
Brian Posted May 6, 2019 Report Posted May 6, 2019 Seems to be a trend to fill modern cast repros with pitch to make it look like they have been mounted and hide signs of casting. Not saying that's what was done here or if they are modern, but it's something to look out for. 3 Quote

parfaitelumiere Posted May 6, 2019 Report Posted May 6, 2019 The first set looks nice, second all the details look like faded, and the gold color looks weird, I don't know if cast, or just old, but with new patina and gold plating... Quote
raynor Posted May 7, 2019 Author Report Posted May 7, 2019 I'd assue cast and in a bit of a hurry for the kenmakiryu, as evident by the quite sloppy paint application. When I start looking for a piece to purchase I will likely go for something similar to the set to the left, or maybe something more in the spirit of Hokusai like these Quote
parfaitelumiere Posted May 7, 2019 Report Posted May 7, 2019 you can check 2 tsuka from same seller, one has drgon menuki, at first view, quality is not bad. 1 Quote
