AndyMcK Posted November 20, 2018 Report Posted November 20, 2018 Greetings, Heading for a bit of R&R in UK next week and thought to ask if locals have good shops etc. to visit for a bit of nihonto viewing? Will be in London and Newcastle. And yes, should have booked the flights a week later, could have checked the auction at Delmar’s... Thank you for any tips! Br, Antti Quote
Guest Rayhan Posted November 20, 2018 Report Posted November 20, 2018 Don't know any good ones in the UK and personally wouldn't risk buying Nihonto in the UK dealer arena unless it is an introduction to a collector in the UK willing to trade or sell. There is a shop in Brighton, stay far away from them! There is Don Bayney at Grey's antiques market- not recomended at all There is the Japanese Gallery in London that has 2 locations which is highly rated but i have only bought woodblock prints from them The most reliable source would be the Token Society of Great Britain http://to-ken.ukwhere many collectors are members and can help advise you For Tosogu contact Ian Chapman http://nihonto.uk/index.html Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted November 20, 2018 Report Posted November 20, 2018 I'm guessing Rayhan means this Japanese Gallery (Kensington and they have 2nd location too)? http://japanesegallery.com/ I met Eddy at Samurai Art Expo and he seemed really nice when I changed few words. Didn't take much of his time as he was busy being one of the organizers. Not sure what kind of swords they have in their regular inventory. Quote
Gakusee Posted November 20, 2018 Report Posted November 20, 2018 The Samurai Gallery is indeed Eddy’s business and Eddy is recommended to deal with. DB is not at Grey’s anymore. Igor Hochmajer also does some dealing but not sure whether out of formal premises. Ian is also recommended but he has another formal occupation. Quote
Guest Posted November 21, 2018 Report Posted November 21, 2018 Or you could go to the Toshiba Gallery at the V&A Museum http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/galleries/level-1/room-45-Japan/ Then there's the Mitsubishi Collection at the BM. https://www.britishmuseum.org/visiting/galleries/asia/rooms_92-94_japan.aspx?cmpid=ppc|mktg|1580972846|b|%2Bbritish%20%2Bmuseum%20%2Bjapan&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2fTJmunk3gIV6pztCh3VOwuJEAAYASAAEgL2d_D_BwE Quote

Gakusee Posted November 21, 2018 Report Posted November 21, 2018 Brian He and another antique dealer (Peter Finer) in St James’ have some rather premium and pricey stuff. St James’ is a very upmarket area where the auction houses are as well, so it is in general worthwhile to visit. 1 Quote
