Prewar70 Posted April 29, 2018 Report Posted April 29, 2018 Was hoping I could get some help translating my Katsumitsu results from Chicago. Thanks. Quote
Ray Singer Posted April 29, 2018 Report Posted April 29, 2018 Bishu Osafune Katsumitsu Meio ni nen hachi gatsu hi (a day in the 8th month of 1493) Quote
Prewar70 Posted April 29, 2018 Author Report Posted April 29, 2018 Wow. That was lightening fast Ray thank you. What about the rest of the Japanese I can't read like the date, hamon, etc. I'm also surprised is was ubu nakago and wakizashi. If I recall I measured it at 24" and change, and I had thought it was suriage. THese are positive results I think. Quote
Ray Singer Posted April 29, 2018 Report Posted April 29, 2018 Date is translated above. Length is 2 shaku 5 by. I cannot read the long notation in the hamon section. Quote
Prewar70 Posted April 29, 2018 Author Report Posted April 29, 2018 What are your thoughts on the classification as wakizashi? Quote
Ray Singer Posted April 29, 2018 Report Posted April 29, 2018 Frankly, I suspect the classification as a wakizashi is a mistake. At the last Tampa shinsa we reviewed the worksheets after shinsa and, in one case where a clearly osuriage sword was marked as ubu, we brought back for the records to be corrected. A 2 shaku 5 sun or 62.1cm sword I believe should always be regarded as a daito. At these stateside shinsa a lot of swords are being reviewed at a quick pace. Mistakes happen. If the sword were mine I would take the sheet back for an explanation, and potentially a correction. 1 Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted April 29, 2018 Report Posted April 29, 2018 Kodachi? Signed, ubu, 76 points, mitsu mune, on the short side but still katana, this could be a candidate for a "good polish." Would very much like to see images, please and thank you? Quote
Prewar70 Posted April 30, 2018 Author Report Posted April 30, 2018 I will get some pics when I get the sword back. Quote
Mark Posted May 1, 2018 Report Posted May 1, 2018 James I would have taken it back to the shinsa and pointed it out, they would have corrected it. I am sure they will catch it when the produce the paper but just to be sure contact Chris and let him know. You can email him at swords@ejapaneseswords.com they get a bit busy and probably just a simple mistake mark 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted May 1, 2018 Report Posted May 1, 2018 A correction to my post above. Meant to write 2 shaku 5 bu (not 5 sun). Still a daito. Quote
