Brian Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 Took me a while to get the com(hard-to-pass)rad  He has an eagle eye for gimei, something that is necessary in this game Maybe this helps. Can't get over the lower left stroke of the naga kanji immediately though? Brian Quote
Stephen Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 Thanks for the photo work Brian, closest to the one on the far left, who knows for sure, well see what the buyer wants me to do with it punt on ebay or restore...IMHO it needs to be looked into more. Quote
Guest reinhard Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 Here's a remark by Iimura Kassho concerning SUKENAGA's mei. It shows SUKENAGA's treatment of the Kanji "Suke" in "Kaga-no-Suke", "Hara" (or "Wara") in "Fujiwara" and "Suke" in "Sukenaga"; depicted from top to bottom. The right column shows them in Tenpo-era and the left column later in Kaei-era. Comparing the mei in question with this list, you'll notice that the first Kanji for "Suke" is made in his later style of writing whereas the other two have more in common with his earlier writing in Tenpo-era. Taking other deviations into consideration, I'm afraid the chances for a zai-mei are not too good. reinhard (who prefers to be quarterback instead of blocking fridges) Quote
Stephen Posted May 4, 2008 Author Report Posted May 4, 2008 hi nice book, which one is that as i have a seller in Nippon id like to run that by him. I do thank all for the help with the mei, I was taught to go by the blade then worry about the mei. I'm quite confident that the blade was made in or around his shop....it has and it matches the attribute for the den, small patterned midare komi short kaeri for the boshi, the hamon is a unique choji midare composed of crowned blossoms, the yakihaba is narrower with yakidashi like Osaka yakidashi in that it starts in suguha and then gradually widens shifting smoothly to midare. and the jiri and yasurime is a match as well, its up to the buyer now imho its worth the price for polish at 41cm to see what comes out. Guest reinhard Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 Hi Stephen, The picture was taken from "ShinShinTo Taikan", vol.I, by Iimura Kasho. The whole set includes "KoTo Taikan" (1 vol.), "ShinTo Taikan" (2 vol.) and "ShinShinTo Taikan" (2 vol.). "KoTo Taikan" and "ShinTo Taikan" are available directly from the Iimuras. "ShinShinTo Taikan" is out of print for a long time now and must be sought at book-antiquarians. reinhard Quote
Guido Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 I'm afraid the chances for a zai-mei are not too good. It's Zaimei 在銘, alright, since that just means "there's an inscription on the Nakago", whereas Shôshinmei æ£çœŸéŠ˜ means "genuine signature". But besides me splitting my usual hairs, I would like to endorse the Iimura Taikans: they belong in the bookshelf of any serious collector. They are not exactly cheap, but the entire set is priced well below what one would pay for a decent addition to a decent collection, not even talking about the substantial monetary loss if falling for a Gimei because of lack of literature. Disclaimer: This, of course, doesn't apply to those of us who own a few JûTô and dozens of TokuHo, or have hundreds of high quality Tsuba and other fittings; they already know what they are doing. I also would like to stress that in no way was it my intention to slander any religion, political affiliation, race or lifestyle-minority. If I unintentionally did that, I deeply bow in apology. I also was definitely not trying to make fun of people who buy countless low end stuff instead of good books and a few quality pieces. If anybody thinks I implied something like that, I'll prostrate myself. And to the very sensible among us: if you think I got sick an tired of hearing the same old, lame jokes again and again and again, but otherwise miss any educated contributions: I seriously contemplate Seppuku, although I actually might not deserve this honorable death. And oh, I also want to make perfectly clear that no animals were hurt in writing this disclaimer. And it doesn't belong in this thread anyhow, which just proves that I'm slowly loosing it ... Quote
Brian Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Ok..disclaimer noted for the future, no need to use it again...please! You forgot to include the bit about "any and all opinions are my own...the content remains my property...do not copy this..unauthorised duplication is prohibited....contents may be extremely hot....do not turn upside down.....seek medical advice before useage... and especially the bit about "may contain traces of nuts!" Brian Quote
Guido Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Ok..disclaimer noted for the future, no need to use it again...please!O. k., deal. You know I love you like the sister I never had, so I won't cause trouble anymore by being "passively aggressive" as they say nowadays. You forgot to include the bit about "any and all opinions are my own...the content remains my property...do not copy this..unauthorised duplication is prohibited....contents may be extremely hot....do not turn upside down.....seek medical advice before useage...Darn' date=' and I thought I had it all covered! and especially the bit about "may contain traces of nuts!" :!I disagree, I think this is self-evident! You know I love you like the sister I never had, so I won't cause trouble anymore by being "passively aggressive" as they say nowadays.Thinking it over some more, I'm afraid I can't control my evil twin *all* the times; but feel free to let me know when it's time to again chain him in the basement, although he can't be held there for extended periods of time - sorry, mate. Jean Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Guido, Is there any copyright attached to your disclaimer? If not, I feel like adopting it, it is fantastic (though IMHHHHHHHo, it should include a disclaimer for its bad use ) Quote

We cant have that! Quote
Rickisan Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Stephen - I like the blade,...there seems to be some activity there. Although she is not the pretteist girl at the party,(at the moment)... I think you are right, after a polish she will be a screamer. Anything else from the auction going up for sale yet? Rick Quote
Stephen Posted May 6, 2008 Author Report Posted May 6, 2008 Hi Rick yes ill place it on the ebay thread, to come back to the sword 99.9 % gimei but it matches the guy so who knows who signed it that day, maybe he gave it to someone who was ....that line of thinking can get out of hand so ill stop. Guido Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Zai mei n my books says blades with oringal sig....but then that would be bringing the thread back to the sword. We cant have that!Sure we can, no objections from me! However, your books are obviously wrong. That's why I supplied the Kanji, I always try to not make stuff up (if it isn't absolutely necceassary). Stephen Posted May 6, 2008 Author Report Posted May 6, 2008 maybe something was lost in translation by Mishina sama of Nagayama sama's book. Guido im sure your right. Quote
Jean Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Zaimei: 在銘 Has a mei, the opposite of mumei. Coming from Afu's Glossary Quote
Guest reinhard Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Guido is correct, of course. "Zai" (in this context) just means "being there". It was a careless mistake of mine and if I had foreseen its consequences, I would have checked the text three times again. Well, it was late at night already....I wish the splitted hair can be glued again and I will not be sued for unnecessarily extending a thread. reinhard Quote
