Bochavista Posted October 10, 2017 Report Posted October 10, 2017 Just wanted to share some pics of an auction find. I believe and have been told it’s a fairly rare 1875 Field officer kyu-gunto. It has a very ornate back strap. Cool piece. Shout out to Shamsy and Bruce for their help!! Chris B Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 10, 2017 Report Posted October 10, 2017 Wow, Chris, that's gorgeous! Looks like a well made blade. I'm on the road and don't have my books, but that backstrap is definitely at least Field-grade. Did you buy it, or just drooling like the rest of us? Quote
Shamsy Posted October 10, 2017 Report Posted October 10, 2017 Very welcome Chris. These swords are not my interest, but the sword appears to be a scarce 1875 pattern Army Field Officer Kyu-Gunto Sword would have been carried by Major, Lt-Colonel and Colonel. So quite high up! That's probably a 'practical' blade too, looks to have a hamon. May be traditionally made or old family blade but I really can't tell from photos. Did it end up being sharp Chris? Yep, he won at an auction Bruce, at a very good price I might add. One of those rare bargains. Quote
Bochavista Posted October 10, 2017 Author Report Posted October 10, 2017 Thanks guys. It is sharp. It is unsigned. Does ‘practical’ mean handmade? Quote
Stephen Posted October 10, 2017 Report Posted October 10, 2017 Thanks guys. It is sharp. It is unsigned. Does ‘practical’ mean handmade? From the finished nakago id say it was. Quote
