A friend has been given the task of selling off a widows husbands small collection of a sword and tsuba. The sword will be posted in the other forum.

However can people give their opinions on this tsuba. Its very small and i presume for a tanto. Theres gold paintwork, and dragonflies and other animals. The outside has gold covered bambo.

Perhaps it would be possible to get opinions on age, school, and a rough value at what to sell it for, i will then pass on this information to my friend.

Any help or opinions on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Lewis

Hi Lewis,

Seems to me that this tanto tsuba has been turned into a pendant (ring attached to the top of the tsuba).

Do you have a picture with the ring ?

I am 90 % sure that the motif is bamboo and sparrows. The dragonflies you see are actually bamboo leaves, I think. :)

Looks like at some stage it was converted into a pendant. :o

I would consult with an expert metalworker or jeweller to see if it is possible to remove the rings without damaging the rest. Yes, there might be a mark, but I would think this would be preferable to having a ring attached to the side. Not a high class tsuba, so I would look at doing that if it were mine.

Im not a tsuba person but i find this one to be suspicious, the edges arent sharp and the patina doesnt look right... hmmm coupled with the ring to make it a pendant... im wondering. :doubt:
