Sue Seki Yari

Decided to go ahead and pick up another Yari while I was at it with the new Katana.

 

 

Sue Seki Yari (Hozon), almost a 16" blade. Nice sturdy sankaku yari in good polish with a cool hamon. Interesting how the hamon is unevenly done; stylistic thing or sign of it being worked on by two people at once to rush production, or what? Any idea? Just shooting in the dark here, perhaps I'm wondering at the importance of something that really has no importance.

Hi Rob, this is may be due to the yari having been polished down and the hamon pattern degraded. This is something you very often see with somewhat tired Sue-Bizen, where the choji-gonome hamon breaks down to areas of suguha with small tobiyaki from what was once the heads of choji. I would guess the originally intended hamon on your sword was a continuous togari-gonome.

The yakiire has to be done in one step, so two smiths would not do it, even putting clay on one side and another smith on the other would be far out. There is no physical flaw and would have been serviceable as it is, so, I think it is just how it turned out, nothing complicated. John

Smiths would ever work on the same blade like that at once. It did seem far fetched but just mulling over ideas. Thank you for your input!
