Offered for sale is a Koto period Mumei Katana in Shirasaya. The sword is Massive though O-Suriage. It retains a nagasa of 27.125" and overall length of just over 36.25". It's size must have been an impressive 31-32" nagasa prior to being cut down. While quite long the massive feel come from teh width of the blade: MOTOHABA: 3.33cm (1.3125"), SAKIHABA: 2.54cm (1") This sword weighs an impressive 960 grams or 2.116 lbs. Nearly a Kilo !!

The overall condition is very good. Aside from a couple of areas of spider rust, the polish is good. See the description of the hataraki in the hamon below. If all of this can be seen clearly, obviously it can be enjoyed just as is. Certainly a polish would make it pristine, but it can be enjoyed as is, for years to come. The photos do not do it justice and while I have made every attempt to give an accurate photographic depiction, it seems the negative points always come out better than the positive ones. The sword looks much, much better in hand than in the photos, which anyone who has purchased from me can attest to. As shown in the photos above there are some hike kizu or light scuffs, scratches, patches of spider rust and a few areas of loose grain or kitte ware, but nothing fatal.

For those who like to know more about previous owners, this sword comes with a really nice addition. The sayagaki has the name of a previous owner along with his address inscribed on it.

There is lots of hataraki or activity seen in the blade. The Hada is ko-itame with masame mixed throughout. The Shinogi-ji is almost pure masame. Masame hada seems to dominate in the habuchi area, which is why the typical almost expected loose hada shows there. This is not at all unusual in Koto swords with Masame. Lots of chikei and ji-nie throughout. The Hamon is midare with tight crisp nioi. Many hataraki such as nioi kuzure, kuchigaiba, sunagashi, nijuba, yo, nie saki and more are clearly visible.

Until 12/20/2016 price is reduced over 50% to $1500 plus S/H.
