savarin Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Hello everybody. First, this is not my sword, I am doing this for a friend who is not computer literate. This sword was found by him in his deceased fathers belongings at the back of a shed and the only information he has is that it probably came from PNG. The condition of the scabbard is terrible, the blade looks in reasonable condition with no nicks, I couldnt see a defined hardening line but it is not a polished blade anymore. The only pictures I have at this time are the very quick ones I took 3 weeks ago before I went to Japan on holiday so are not complete. (I can get more) My time in any one area was limited and the two sword shops I found were closed. The librarian at the Kyoto Museum was helpful and translated the characters as Honshu, Kai, Jun, Tetsu on one side and Kiyo, Tuna on the other. He also thought it was an officers sword but wasnt certain. If it has any family name linked to it he would like to return it but I understand that WW11 era swords are not allowed in. If it cannot go back can you give me any suggestions on restoration as he will keep it on display. Any help is greatly appreciated. Many thanks Charles Quote
Thekirsh Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Hi Charles, Have a look at this previous thread http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/7730-gendai-gunto-mounts-xxx-tsuna/ Cheers Simon K 1 Quote
Shugyosha Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Hi Charles, Simon nailed it. Have a look at Morita san's post for a translation of the meaning of the longer inscription: 木州海純鉄. Quote
savarin Posted October 4, 2016 Author Report Posted October 4, 2016 Gee, that was fast, thanks guys. I take it that this cant be given back as its a wartime sword? Quote
Brian Posted October 4, 2016 Report Posted October 4, 2016 Forget giving it back. Most people in Japan don't care about swords, don't want them, and are ashamed of the memories they invoke.Few families would want a sword back, or the hassles it brings to register and keep. And all that aside, yes..it's likely a prohibited item anyways. Quote
