dominnimod Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 I was searching for a kogatana when i encountered this. It's a modern 1-piece kogatana casted, that seems to have been dif-hardened. I would like to hear opinions about it on whether is a decent piece or letter opener junk. Thanks Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 Here's another example similar to yours. I doubt it is a letter opener but just a different type of kogatana. But what the hell do I know??? http://www.e-sword.jp/kogatana/1410-6020.htm Quote
ROKUJURO Posted June 9, 2016 Report Posted June 9, 2016 Josh,if it was cast, it will probably not be differentially hardened. Quote
dominnimod Posted June 9, 2016 Author Report Posted June 9, 2016 Josh, if it was cast, it will probably not be differentially hardened. But the handle is clearly casted, couldn't they cast the iron piece and heat treat afterwards? Quote

ROKUJURO Posted June 10, 2016 Report Posted June 10, 2016 Josh, you need a special steel for the Japanese way of YAKIIRE. The handle seems indeed to be cast and the "HAMON" has probably been brushed into the patinated surface. Quote
