SBranson Posted March 15, 2016 Report Posted March 15, 2016 While searching for examples of shobu zukuri katana, I have found very few other than the modern Chinese versions but I came across this image and wondered if anyone knows any more information about it. I find it fascinating and would like to know when and who made it and details about it. Thanks. Quote
Geraint Posted March 15, 2016 Report Posted March 15, 2016 Dear Stuart. Shobu zukuri should properly be a blade where the three lines of the edge of the mune, the shinogi and the ha all converge at the kissaki. The one you illustrate is more likely a nagamaki naoshi, (sre purpose nagamaki), or naginata naoshi. For lots of great information get hold of a copy of this and enjoy the read! http://www.amazon.com/Facts-Fundamentals-Japanese-Swords-Collectors/dp/4770031300 All the best Quote
SBranson Posted March 15, 2016 Author Report Posted March 15, 2016 Thank you for your reply. Though I do not have that particular book, I have several others and from my research the meeting of the shinogi with the mune seems to happen just short of the kissaki in most cases. (including the diagram in the Connoisseur's... book) But that's beside the point as I see though that the sugata does seem to be more in keeping with a nagamaki naoshi. Thanks again for that idea as an image search for nagamaki naoshi definitely shows more pieces that bear a resemblance to this one. On another note... when did that book become unavailable.. I had thought of purchasing it in the past but now the only stock on amazon is $150! Has this gone the way of the Connoisseur's Book of Japanese Swords? Quote
Grey Doffin Posted March 15, 2016 Report Posted March 15, 2016 Facts and Fundamentals is out of print and difficult to find. Copies I've had I've sold at about $100 and I've never had a copy stay in stock long. I highly recommend the book. Grey Quote
Shugyosha Posted March 15, 2016 Report Posted March 15, 2016 I just wish that I'd had the foresight to buy a couple of cases of these books when they were available. I'd be laughing right now. Quote
