vajo Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 I'm interested in a late 44 gunto. Can you help me translate this from picture? There is no mark and no stamp on the nakago. It's offered for around 1.000 Dollar. Quote
Brian Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 Unlikely it will be Gendaito, more likely it is a Showato, even without stamps. $1000 would be too much for that. Quote
vajo Posted January 16, 2016 Author Report Posted January 16, 2016 Thank you Brian. I thought without stamp it could be gendaito? I didn't find out which Sadamitsu has made this. There are a lot of smiths called sadamitsu. What is the fair price for a showa-to late '44 gunto? Quote
Brian Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 Without stamps...it could be a Gendaito. However, I have learned that in most cases (with a few exceptions) these "chippy" style signatures mean Showato. The other thing on "1944" style swords...if it has that metal olive/tan coloured scabbard, and un-laquered tsuka, then it is almost always non-traditionally made. If it has the wooden higher class saya and lacquered tsuka then they usually contain Gendaito. It's late her, and I have some serious back pain...so off to bed, but hopefully someone can expand on what I mean here, and explain it better.
