At last DTI, there were a few sue Bizen katate uchi, brand new, one of them I think was hitatsura, outstanding.

Yes, it's Yosozaemon Sukesada. He made a handful of these blades in hitatsura. Seven katana that I count among the Juyo blades with a couple others that have a mix. The most famous Juyo Bunkazai Yosozaemon is one of the mixed blades. This was not at the DTI but has been in an American collection for a while. Genbeinojo made them like this too and I think that may have been one of his at the DTI. Memory is faint now. I think there was a tanto for sure but not sure if I saw a katana now.

Some of his tanto are done like this too.

Muromachi is an interesting time as you have Kanesada in Mino making nice Rai copies and you have Yosozaemon Sukesada in Bizen making better Soshu style swords than the Soshu smiths of the time. He worked also in suguba, and in gunome and in the crab claw speciality of his, and in some crazy midareba. Some are in simple rolling notare (aimed at Kanemitsu?) There is one with an ichimai boshi that looks like it is calling out to Go Yoshihiro too.

The hitatsura seems to start with him. I don't see any among Hikobei Sukesada's blades and I don't recall seeing it before him. It's not clear then if he learned it from someone in Soshu or just decided one day he would make them like this. His hitatsura has a difference appearance than Soshu hitatsura especially from those in his time which became very unnatural. If I had to guess then I'd say he was inspired and self taught in this.

The educational aspect is what differentiates this from a sale item in the commercial section, for those wondering.

If and when it arrives and is for sale...it can be posted there. But for now it is a nice learning tool.

So it is ok for everyone to post sales items in this forum as long as they "haven't arrived yet" and have some "educational value"?

Are "educational value" and "items for sale" mutually exclusive?

Let's be honest: it's merchandise. These "infomercials" amount to advertising, plain and simple. No reason all the "educational value" can't be given in the sales forum where merchandise is normally listed, if not in the ad, then linked to the merchant's sales site.

If the point/purpose is really, truly, educational, there should be no mention that the item is, will be, might be, can be, for sale. Otherwise, all it appears to be is a crass attempt to generate interest and make a sale.

Well Chris, there is no mention it is for sale, although it may be, just that it is coming. There are many posts of items that are in transit by people and many looking for information about items that a minute later are in the sales category. Some illuminating information may have been nice, but, hardly crass. That's just too harsh, especially given there is no mention of sale. John

John-

While I agree with you that it wasn't explicitly said to be "for sale", I think you have to consider the history here - we have seen this type of thing time and again- and consider the implicit meaning when a known merchant lists a sword and says "it is coming soon".....It is a simple matter to connect the dots.

If it isn't going to be for sale, then I stand humbly corrected and apologize. If it is indeed as I suspected when I made my comment, then, what I said...

Personally, I find the posting of merchandise in discussion forums by known, active dealers "for interest" entirely crass. There is no reason it can't be listed in the sales section, as mentioned, with a link to the owner's site for the "educational content". Also, apparently discussion of merchandise in sales threads is said to be at the discretion of the original poster, so why not just post your "educational content" there along with the item? I just don't see the need for infomercials in the discussion forums...

Perhaps "crass", like "educational aspect" is in the eyes of the beholder?

Nice sword. Thanks for posting the pics.

I think this can be educational in that I bet everyone doesn't know of these Bizen, hitatsura blades.

Chris,

You seem unusually obsessed with people posting stuff that is for sale in other sections. Now, considering the commercial section is FREE and there is no real benefit to posting it anywhere else....I find your obsession a bit odd. I mean, it is not like someone is dodging listing fees or gaining anything. Besides the lack of a price (since it isn't even up for sale yet, that is irrelevant) what exactly do you think slipped past all the members who are viewing it?

In case you missed the last 10 times I mentioned it.... For Sale items are deleted once sold. They are not really educational since the info is removed once sold. Items with a decent write up and lots of info are best served posted elsewhere where the info can remain for the future.

I suggest you leave the policing to the mods and admin who will decide where things go. And if you feel so strongly about people who might gain extra commercial promotion from their posts, I hereby suggest you stay out of ALL posts to do with the NBTHK and any criticism of that organization, since I see you posting eagerly in those threads in spite of the fact that you are a director of a competitor organization that gains money from its services. Prudence would advise that if you are rooting for one team, you stay out of discussions about the other team. Just in case any accusations are made about influencing people where to send their money you see?
You might also refrain from mentioning in any posts at all that you broker shinsa and sword restoration services, since that is also commercial promotion outside of that section. I usually let that slide too since it forms part of other discussions. But if you prefer to keep strictly to rules in an informal discussion forum that doesn't require them to be set in stone?

"Unusually obsessed" about posting ads in the discussion forum is a bit over the top and provocative. It is also misses the essence of my concern. I don't think anything "slipped past the members"- I think most at this point are well aware of what goes on.

Removing sales items: here's an idea: don't if you think there is something of "educational value". Archive them. Or credit your membership with the smarts to follow a link to the merchant's page where all that "educational content" is sure to be found.

I have no problem complying with your "suggestions", as do most of the commercial dealers here who refrain from posting infomercials in the discussion sections, post prices, and post real sales ads. You know, follow your rules. If my compliance will allow you to apply the rules equally, consider it done.

If you want to call me obsessed, get it right- I am obsessive about equal treatment for all. Letting some bend and break the rules regularly while holding others to them smacks of cronyism. Don't give me the "educational aspect" excuse as there are plenty of ways to preserve the so-called "educational content", what little there actually is, without sacrificing integrity. This "ad" is a prime example-- "look what I have coming in", together with a few photos--claiming it's educational is an insult to every member here....

I would, and no doubt many others, would gladly sacrifice this kind of "educational content" for a little more equality.

Hey, here's an idea- put it to a vote with a poll: Equal rules for all or some more equal than others....Democracy at its finest...

Firstly, don't tell me how to apply the rules. They are my rules. I will apply them any way I want.

Secondly, don't pretend this is an unusual occurrence from you. I have ALL the other "reports" archived every time you have a gripe about the same person. Please don't patronize us into thinking this is not a personal issue. It is now more than 10 reports and issues from you about the same old minor things.

Thirdly, I am the one who has to edit and archive stuff, and since you have no idea what is involved and how much work it is...I suggest you leave it up to me as to how and what I "archive"

Fourth, why is it always you who seems to have an issue with something this minor? You always talk big about "all these people that agree with you" and yet none of them has contacted me with the same complaints. Let them speak up! Snide comments about all these people at the sword shows talking down about the NMB seem to be your trademark "warning" to me.

Fifth...as someone who greatly benefits from the exposure here for your own services, odd that I receive thanks and support from just about everyone else.....

Resist the urge to debate this point by point. I am not feeling democratic right now and this is not a debate.

Yeah, I have reported these infomercials many times. So what? Isn't that what the report button is for? Be honest- I can name three different dealers I reported who have done this or failed to post prices. I can't help it if the same people continue to break the rules. If something was done, I wouldn't be pointing it out.

Attacking me doesn't change anything-as you clearly indicate, you are the one who makes and applies (or not) the rules. I have just pointed out the inconsistencies, the unequal treatment, and what looks like cronyism. If that's how you want things, as you note, that is up to you.

I like very much when people post pictures of excellent swords. As I posted above I bet there are many people who haven't seen these bizen hitatsura blades. And the pictures are very good.

Again, I like pictures of good swords. I do not personally get the opportunity to see work of this caliber in person all that often. I learn from it. And anything that prevents that from happening I don't like. I'd like for Darcy to be able to continue to post pics of nice swords without getting a hard time about it.

And Chris please understand that I'm not taking sides when I say this but, what's the deal when you give the advice that a sword show with shinsa is coming and the poster should submit to Nthk shinsa? Your the director right?

Now I agree submission is affordable, and easy. Easier than sending to Japan for sure and cheaper. But either way an organization you're directly involved with benefits from this "advice".

Is this an advertisement?

I'm not sure but it could be taken that way.

You are very helpful when asked questions and that I appreciate. So I'm certainly not trying to upset you or degrade your contributions to NMB. I'm just tossing out some perspective.
