They look like where pinholes were made by corrosion and too deep to polish out without major major loss of steel. John

Thank you John, that makes sense. Not a fatal flaw I would think, but not good news. I'll have to see what it looks like in hand.

Ken, it may just look like that, we are only seeing a portion of the sword. There may be some spots towards the shinogi. The corrosion may have been localised in the saya or it may even be an original forging flaw. It needs assesment in hand for sure. John

I .....am having trouble figuring out why the corrosion would just be in the hamon, which is much harder, rather than the ji....

Ken,

 

the HAGANE contains more carbon and thus is more easily attacked by acids and corrosion than the 'softer' JIGANE.
