tokashikibob Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 Gentlemen, Have not gone to see this one yet, but the picture(s) show weird spots on the hamon, shingane? Looks to be recently polished. Does the mei look legit? Best Regards, Bob Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 They look like where pinholes were made by corrosion and too deep to polish out without major major loss of steel. John Quote

John Thank you John, that makes sense. Not a fatal flaw I would think, but not good news. I'll have to see what it looks like in hand. Best regards, Bob Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 I agree with John, but am having trouble figuring out why the corrosion would just be in the hamon, which is much harder, rather than the ji.... Ken Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 30, 2014 Report Posted May 30, 2014 Ken, it may just look like that, we are only seeing a portion of the sword. There may be some spots towards the shinogi. The corrosion may have been localised in the saya or it may even be an original forging flaw. It needs assesment in hand for sure. John Quote
ROKUJURO Posted May 31, 2014 Report Posted May 31, 2014 I .....am having trouble figuring out why the corrosion would just be in the hamon, which is much harder, rather than the ji.... Ken, the HAGANE contains more carbon and thus is more easily attacked by acids and corrosion than the 'softer' JIGANE. Quote
