specialkg18 Posted July 30, 2013 Report Posted July 30, 2013 Hello I'm a newbie to this all and I was left 2 swords from my grandfather. I posted on another forum to get some information on them and was able to get some good information because the Nihonto community is very nice and knowledgeable. So now I am wondering if anyone could possibly tell me what these swords could be worth or any other information you might know about these swords? Thank you The first sword has no markings on the tang but each fitting has matching numbers including the lock button. I was only able to post so many pictures due to limits so I was able to show atleast 2 fittings marked. Thank you Kyle W (edited to add signature sorry lol) Quote
specialkg18 Posted July 30, 2013 Author Report Posted July 30, 2013 This is the second sword. And with permission from John Stuart I have included that he was able to identify this is in sosho and the swords maker as "Yakumo Amatsu Masakiyo saku". Thank you John. Also any other information from anyone or estimated values is completely appreciated. Thank you everyone Kyle W Quote
Stephen Posted July 30, 2013 Report Posted July 30, 2013 Kyle id post more pix of the blades, fittings and numbers bring little in finding out what they be worth, first blade looks Shinto, id show as much activty as possible...like the mei on the Navy sword. Quote
Stephen Posted July 30, 2013 Report Posted July 30, 2013 searching the latter smith brings up alot on Masakiyo...intersting. been talked about before, if Chris B says good smith id go with that. http://www.google.com/search?q=Yakumo+A ... 1I7GPEA_en Quote
Stephen Posted July 30, 2013 Report Posted July 30, 2013 in Navy mounts like yours, priced at 480.000 yen http://www.sanmei.com/contents/media/A6 ... _PUP_E.htm that is with blade in top condition, your needs a closer look as it looks rusted and stained, even from the one pix maybe something cut in ones back yard, close ups woud tell. cabowen Posted July 30, 2013 Report Posted July 30, 2013 Are you looking for a valuation to sell them, for insurance, or ? Quote
Dr Fox Posted July 30, 2013 Report Posted July 30, 2013 Just this week, I was shown another sword with that exact mon badge in silver. Would that be arrows or feathers, and whose is it pl. Denis. Quote
Lance Posted July 30, 2013 Report Posted July 30, 2013 Looks like Maruni chigai takanoha (crossed hawk feathers) below is a quick link I found with more info,: http://tenryuenglish.wordpress.com/2012/09/11/kamon/ A notable user of this mon was Asano Naganori, the main figure in the story of the 47 ronin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asano_Naganori Idon't think it would be possible to link the mon on any swords to a specific family due to the adoption of Kamon by non-samurai families during the Meiji period (I think, might be earlier) Regards, Lance Quote
mdiddy Posted July 30, 2013 Report Posted July 30, 2013 Would that be arrows or feathers, and whose is it pl. Takanoha mon - my favorite. According to google the Kubo family used it. Probably by late Edo period everybody used it. So now I am wondering if anyone could possibly tell me what these swords could be worth or any other information you might know about these swords? To the OP: they are nice swords for military mounts, better than the average. Keep them oiled to prevent rust and search the forum for more tips on proper care and maintenance. Close-up pictures of each of the blades could help with evaluating them. Quote
george trotter Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Sosho script is hard to read for sure, but maybe the inscription next to the date says: Tame (ni) Kinoshita Shi (For Mr Kinoshita)? Maybe Morita san can confirm or correct... regards, Quote
cabowen Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 George is correct...The sword is dated Feb., 1944 to the left, and Tame Kinoshita shi (made for Mr. Kinoshita) to the right. Quote
specialkg18 Posted July 31, 2013 Author Report Posted July 31, 2013 Wow guys you are all so knowledgeable and very quick with your responses which I greatly appreciate. And yes Chris I was thinking about selling the 2 swords. Me and my mother sat down last night and decided that because of the our monitary situation and all the interest in these swords that she wants to unfortunately part with these swords. So I'm asking you guys what you think the best way for me to sell these swords would be. Thank you Kyle Quote
J Reid Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 I'm sure if you post them in the for sale section here you'll find a buyer or 2.. These are both nice finds.. I'd like to see more pictures of the older blade to see if its needs/worth restoration. Also.. From what I see I would say that the first blade could fetch $1500-$2000 as is and the gendaito $2000-$2500 as is.. Prices could fluctuate based on further analysis of condition. IMO Quote
Stephen Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Think Josh is looking at top end and if activity in blades warrent such a price, as he states better close ups of the blades faults will tell, like rust, pitting, nics in he ha, ect. Quote
specialkg18 Posted July 31, 2013 Author Report Posted July 31, 2013 Masakiyo Kyle Edit: I used a different camera with more megapixels so they had to be cropped a little bit and the file sizes seem to be much larger than the other pictures. I apologize Quote
Dr Fox Posted July 31, 2013 Report Posted July 31, 2013 Thank you, Lance and Matt. Another corner dusted off. Regards Denis. Quote
