Grev,

I don't think it is that terrible at all. A solid mid level Edo tsuba. Nothing fantastic, but nothing worthless either.

To be honest, I think it is awesome to have a tsuba depicting tsuba :glee:

That is a nice touch, and one I haven't seen before. Not sure what is depicted on the other side. The maker must have had a quiet chuckle when making it though.

Hi Grev UK,

 

As Brian R. said I would say average quaility Aizu Shoami school tsuba from the late Edo Period or early Meiji Period. The design is also one I haven't seen before. The reverse side design is I think a single folding fan.

Thanks for the replies, much better than I expected

 

I was happy with the patina and the rough finish which raises the mimi slightly

My biggest gripe was the inlay on the tsuba

If the inlay was smaller and therefore in proportion to the tsuba it would have looked OK

I don't think it will be in my collection for much longer!
