This Week's Edo Period Corner
estcrh replied to Bugyotsuji's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Piers if this is the six barreled one he is interested in then there must be some deep pockets involved as it was listed at $35,000 if I remember right. -

Here is one more three barrel and a six barrel, not sure about the six barrel, something about the metal of the barrels looks funny. -

Piers I added the original two images to the close ups. Here is an image I posted earlier along with some close ups. -

Here are some close up images of the three barrel tanegashima shown previously. (I added the original two images) -
Here is a link to a previous discussion on yari shafts. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7122&p=56945#p56945

Ken, your answer confused me a little as the tachiuchi is were the nakago rests but I looked around a bit and found this image which shows the terms tachiuchi, tachibashiri, and tachiuke all meaning the reinforced part of the shaft. Not unusual for Japanese armor and weapons parts to have several conflicting names.
-
Ken, I am not familiar with the term "tachi ba hiri", can you explain. Tachiuchi/tachiuke, the reinforced section of the yari nagaye or ebu (shaft/pole)
-
Piers, I am glad for any translation, even if flawed I was able to get the basic information and as in many cases the seller really is just guessing, if you find any further information that would be great.
-
Piers...thats pretty much what I got from it. Well now what? Know any armor experts in Japan who may have an opinion, it is not every day that you see a possible unknown type of armor defense.

Thomas, how about some information on your collection?
-
Ian, I saw this to, first thing I noticed is that the tassels look like the type that were attached to the bit of a samurai horse, otherwise it is entirely possible that this could be a version of the trauma plate, but I did not see any holes for the attachment of a cloth or leather backing which you would expect in order to protect the armor worn underneath if it was worn as said. Modern steel trauma plate that fits into a pocket of a bullet resistant vest.

Piers, I saw either this same one at the 2011 San Francisco sword show or there are more than one of these, the ridge on the barrel runs down both sides and rests on the stock, I do not think there is a bizen as the head seems to be part of the barrel, have you ever seen a serpentine on a tanegashima with a hole rather than a slot? If not cast then what, its a strange one. -

I was sent some images of a tanegashima pistol, the stock looks real but the barrel looks cast, any thoughts. -

Piers, the metal looks very smooth and I see slotted heads, any idea how old it is. -

I received 2 copies of #1 book and no contact since then, Trevor was very disappointed with the response to his first book and understandably so, I encouraged him to do his second and third books as ebooks as this is a very cost effective way of getting a book out in todays market but unfortunately that did not happen. If his third book does not get published ever it will be a huge loss to anyone who is really interested in the learning about subject of samurai armor.

Australian Auction 29th June
estcrh replied to Brian's topic in Sword Shows, Events, Community News and Legislation Issues
Very frustrating, no detailed images and the descriptions are not good, its very hard to buy a sword this way unless you could be there in person, its unfortunate that the owner did not try listing the swords on the forum or at least Ebay before going the auction route. -
Piers, I would feel the same way if I could not remove the bisen, I would just have to at least try working on it, force is not always necessary, sometimes gentle persuasion over a period of time works as well as brute strength. I have removed many similar bolts from old cast iron American engine blocks with repeated applications of oil, light tapping, light wrenching, icing the bolt head, heating and cooling the area etc.

I believe it is an alternate name and not necessarily the only correct name.

Nice collection, your kake looks good.
