I appreciate your input and will look into camellia oil. Conway

@Bruce Pennington that is the "delta punch" found on these Masayasu swords.Although, it's more of a circle on this one. It does have a mune stamped number which may or may not match the rest of the fittings. I think the 6 and 3 are upside down on the mune. Note the small star and the "A." Conway

I have put choji oil on a very poor shape arsenal mumei blade (not the one I posted about last week) before and it darkened the nakago. That's why I haven't touched this sword in the years that I have owned it. I didn't want to darken the tang. @Stephen Stephen's approach seems interesting, but like I said I am hesitant when it comes to tackling rust because I feel afterward it's always obvious the piece was fiddled with. Thanks for the replies. I'll put a little choji oil on those spots. Conway

Greetings, I am hoping for advice on removing light red rust from the nakago without altering the patina. The rust spots don't show up the best in the picture, but the areas in question are next to the 尾 and from 泰 down. I know the rust removal question has been raised many times before, but I just want to double check before I make any preservation missteps. Thanks. Conway

Help with Identifying a Mumei Gunto
Conway S replied to Conway S's topic in Military Swords of Japan
@Ooitame Thanks for the reply. I looked at the thread you referenced and "Photographing Nihonto" by Darcy Brockbank for some tips. I did get good results experimenting with other swords, but this one was hard to capture due to the scuffs and old rust spots. I know given the condition and being mum attributing to a period may be difficult. Conway -
Very cool that you have two now! I wondered if you were going to go for the one Thomas posted.... and now I know. Conway

Rene, Take a look at this thread for a brief discussion on the above sword. @Renech Conway

Type 95 Nagoya Side-latch at Auction
Conway S replied to Bruce Pennington's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
My sentiments exactly. "Thanks" for sharing with the group. None of the Type 95s go cheap online. From a numbers perspective, are the Mizuno and late Suya with unfullered blades more rare than the side latch? Conway -

It's hard to find the right lighting for snapping pictures without capturing too much glare. Let me know if more pictures are needed. Thanks. Conway -

Greetings, I am hoping for some opinions on a mumei gunto I have had for a while. It came to me in an antique shirasaya. My thoughts are this is an arsenal made blade based on what I perceive to be a faint 三 subassembly number. Would the file marks fall into the category of kesho-yasuri ? I am trying to better identify this sword for my own understanding. I appreciate any help. Thanks. Conway

Souvenir sword with fake blade?
Conway S replied to John C's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
Also true on Live Auctioneers and other online auctions. If you pay top dollar and then have to figure in the buyer's premium, taxes, and shipping, it becomes a slippery slope. Gone are the days when you could go the auction in person and try to get a good deal because there might be no one else bidding on the item. Conway -
@Jcstroud Did you see the one posted in this thread by Swords? Scroll down past the eBay sword. Conway

Is anyone able to help me with this signature please?
Conway S replied to Suci's topic in Translation Assistance
Luh, A lot of great information about Masahiro can be found in this article. If possible, could you post more photos of the rest of the sword? @Jcstroud take a look. Conway -

I saw this Mitsunaga souvenir that sold yesterday with painted subassembly number 二五. Does anyone know the length of the nakago on these? I saw the one Bruce posted earlier was also not shortened. Conway

I agree with that. I fell under the Showa22 spell for a moment as I didn't look closely at the second character before my initial post. I am aware the seller lists some questionable pieces with mis-matched koshirae and polishing half measures... They did have a General's grade Type 19 parade sword that looked very tempting recently. But my suspicion is always high when sellers take pictures from 3 feet away. Conway
