Possible Re Heated/forge O-Suriage? 13 Inch Wakazashi
Blazeaglory replied to Blazeaglory's topic in Nihonto
10-4 bood guddy! At least I can examine it to familiarize myself with how gimei look in some cases. Plus I'd like to see where this blade actually came from. Thanks for all the info guys! -
But but but... rabbits?

I see, so you're saying anything signed as such is geimei? More than likely as Jussi said it's probably Genroku or later and sig/date was added then to make it more appealing. But all this is just assumption and speculation I guess until someone at shinsa with knowledge actually holds it and looks at it. I'm just rambling haha -

Waiting to get this in hand but so far I'm leaning towards geimei. -

Possible Re Heated/forge O-Suriage? 13 Inch Wakazashi

One thing I just noticed is that the nakago is not filed it's "stipled" or dotted. I don't know the exact phrase but it appears that instead of diagonal lines filed in it was hit multiple times with very tiny punches. Achieves the same function but a little artistic maybe? Unless my eyes deceive me. What drew me to this one was the short length of Wakizashi. At first I was thinking maybe it was a o-suriage tachi into what it is now or an actual 'rare' early Wakizashi but I guess I was being hopeful haha. I've been trying to go by the "judge the sword" perspective (although this one isn't in the greatest condition I'm hoping a good polish might bring it out a little). Thanks for the advice. Be nice if it was older but a Genroku era blade would still be great. -

Ah I messed up. I was thinking about GENTOKU era. I accidentally typed Genroku.. But yes I was thinking that maybe the person I bought it from had those two era's confused as well. Seems to fit better in the Genroku huh? The "mei" says Sadamune School but I have read that is a highly forged school? You think with the condition of the nakago that is Edo? Seems to be fairly worn down but I bow to your expertise:-) -

Well I pulled the trigger on this one (roughly $500usd). Its a little beat up and possible GeiMei but I like that sorta thing. The weirder the better. Although i still love the top end super smith Nihonto something keeps drawing me to the battle damaged or "off" blades. But yes even some items I wont buy haha. I mean a sword is drawn to blood right? Its a 13.9' O-Wakizashi 'supposedly' from the Gentoku during Kamakura era but its style would seem to put it in later era (if not it would be one of a handful of extremely rare) considering not many Wakizashi are from Komakura era. Its Shinogi Zukuri for one. The blade does appear to be really old tho and Koto but I could be wrong Ill post more pics later when I have time. -
I love this so much! https://nihontoantiques.com/project/kozuka-fsk-552/

The pic with yellow tassel directly is too large to post but if you look at last photo above you can see it hiding behind the saya. It's a smaller tassel. I didn't even notice it until now and I've been admiring this blade for 20 years lol Looks more gold actually

Just when I was thinking about dropping facebook... you pull me back in! Why must I spend my money on old pretty metal?
-
Pretty much the same in 99.9% of cultures. Not only for smoking but can be used for fuel clothes industry construction etc... just like the saying goes, everything in moderation

Is the blade gold in color or just lighting?

Hello again. Not much is known about this blade. The story goes as they were bulldozing blades into the harbor many soldiers did not want to see them destroyed. They were grabbing them as many as could carry. My friends grandfather stood by watching somewhat amused not really wanting a sword. Hours later word came down they were allowed only two items to bring back. So many soldiers began trading swords and the ones who had too many were walking around shouting "extra sword extra sword". It was at this time that a soldier came to my friends grandfather and said "TAKE IT". A few years later at home when the grandfather had some young children one of the boys stole the sword for the day and began CHOPPING BRICKS. Well when grandfather found him he got a butt whipping. Sword has never been altered except for that incident so anything on this would be original. Along with the long red tassel there is also a shorter yellow tassel. The nakago has lots of writing but he didn't want to get technical so I just took pictures of what I could. Here's a different angle of tsuba. All the good pics are too large to upload it seems

I think that's the definition? Anyways its a ww2 bring back. I didn't have time to remove the tsuka but it's either signed and dated or just dated. My friend said it translated to 1943. Everything you see is how it's been since 1943. Some chips and scratches have been added sadly Some of the files are to large for upload

Haha pretty much! It's a beautiful day here in Southern California! I'm currently working in Huntington Beach. Lots of people and very crowded but the cool breeze makes up for it!

I agree but being drunk and stoned are really two different things. Too much saki and you can tell a person is wasted but too much cannabis and we would never know. I think we are looking at it through modern eyes and modern opinions and concepts. While I agree that samurai would or should never be so impaired that they couldn't concentrate and it messed with their balance etc... I think on the ground during the moment I'm sure many samurai liked to hit the saki hard at times but according to modern romanticized bushido a proper samurai would or should never do that. I also notice allot of drinking in the movies from the 60s and 70s. It seems every main samurai gets drunk like a skunk haha Anyways there was a burial of a Viking queen that was roughly 1000 years old. She wss also buried with her elderly nanny that they sacrificed along side her. Inside her medicinal pouch was nothing but marijuana. It wasn't until the early/mid 20th century that our governments started demonizing cannabis. I do think the tsuba is Japanese maple but I couldn't resist the joke. I always like a healthy debate too. Thanks for the great info and putting up with my somewhat controversial topics! D

Yah I agree I was just having some fun :-)
-
Yah I agree. I was thinking of a really bad one or broken into pieces but I guess it would depend on the exact condition of the sword
-
I think it's cool. Better than being discarded I think. I was thinking about using a really beat up 11th century Viking sword that no-one wanted by cleaning it up cutting it into menuki sized pieces and using for modern made tsuka menuki. Hurts to think about it but better than being recycled into a iPod
