@WillFalstaff You can use leather wax. I use a thin coat of petroleum jelly. Cheap and gives a good result. Used it for more than 40 years to preserve leather liners of German helmets.

The latest addition to my collection. Old blade, civil tsuba and an inscription by a soldier of the RAF Regiment on the leather combat cover. G.J. Southard RAFR Malaya 1945.

Hi Rob, I know about shrinkage and sloppy covers made off finer and soft leather but this one is not sloppy at all. The leather looks very thick and sturdy. In my opinion that is suspicious. Maybe we should start a separate thread about leather combat covers. Always good to see some original examples and there are a lot of variations. Regards, Ed

This sword is highly suspect in my opinion. All the details mentioned by others are strange, and what also strikes me is the extremely shrunken leather sheath, while it fits very loosely around the scabbard. If leather shrinks, it's very odd that it only shrinks lengthwise while the circumference has actually increased.
