Dear NMB members: I am having a bit of difficulty with this mei and translation. Hopefully someone can help. It just came into my office yesterday from an 83 year old gentleman. I am wondering if it is "Something (no) Kami Norinao," or maybe "Tsuda Omi (no) Kami Sukenao." I cannot tell if the date is 1521 +3, or if the date side has a special made for name or invocation, or what. If you think it could be by this "Sukenao," does anyone have a legit mei by this smith for comparison? It came in shirasaya with horn parts on the mekugi peg and the koiguchi. Dear NMB Members: I need help translating this mei, and identifying these mounts. My best guess is "Bishu Osafune Sukemitsu." It looks Koto, late 1400's- early 1500's. It has a 28" nagasa. Your take? The mounts appear to be Army Cavalry, maybe special ordered to fit this ancestral blade. The guard is brass, but looks like a WWII cavalry steel guard. Dear NMB member: I recently acquired this with other swords from a collection put together in the 70's and 80's. In reviewing a previous topic, I am wondering if this is an Emergency late war sword produced in China or Korea during the War. It appears to have the correct Japanese foul weather covered saya, similar looking tsuka, but a stamp on the tang I am not familiar with and do not recognize. Wow! Thanks for all of the information on these fittings. The sword is very delicate, similar to a Boy's Day sword. The doll menuki would seem consistent with a sword given to a young person. I will attach a few photos of the sword shortly. Does this look like a child's sword, consistent with the fittings? Regards, Bill E. Sheehan
