If "By Nihonto stamp", you mean a stamp on the blade certifying that the Sword has been made according Japanese traditional forging methods, I am afraid not. :)

You can bet that if there was such a thing, someone would have counterfeited it a couple of centuries ago, and all the fakers and rip-off merchants would be using it.

Life just aint meant to be that easy I'm afraid. 'Made in Japan' stamped on a blade just doesnt cut it with the nihonto crowd.

Regardless of what the kanji characters on the stamp may say, such a stamp says only FAKE.

The person that told you that there was such a thing is either a fool or a liar. In either event you wouldn't want to buy a sword from him.

Seems to me I have seen a WWII era gunto with a 日本刀 hot stamp a long time ago.....I wouldn't be too quick to judge and dismiss without photos....

Hi Gentlemen,

just to answear the question about stamp´s on old sword´s, there are some in my opinion  . I saw few nakago with this kind of feature, without nowing anything about there meaning. With stamp you mean a kind of symbol combined with kanji, not just kanji or mon? The things i saw, were maybe chisseld, not 100% shure that the were stamped.

If i find some example i will sure post it here :doubt:.

Regards

I remember seeing a western sabre made (it is said) for the colonial government of Victoria Australia in the 1880-90s. Stamped on the front of the sword guard were the kanji "Dai Ni Hon Sei" (Made in Great Japan) See F & G "Jap. Mil. & Civ. Sw. & Dirks" pp276-77.

Is this the Nihonto stamp you mean?

Is there such a thing as a Nihonto stamp if so can someone post what it looks like.

Since you seem to have had the Nihonto stamp pic all along, and you seem to read Japanese, wouldn't it have been simpler to post your last post first and say "anyone seen this before?" (would've saved a bit of now wasted time).

Did I miss something? Are we branching out into domestic blades and kitchen utensils now? Look out gardening tools, here we come!!!

Come to think of it, didnt we do pruning/flower cutting blades with tosho signatures some time back? See what these little domestic digressions can lead to????? :D

There are people like you on every board; those that think they operate with a higher level of intellect, you're the basic know it all and class clown looking for attention; while trying to have a laugh at the expense of someone else.

So yes you are missing something!
