BenVK Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 I've been considering buying this sword but there's something about it that worries me but I can't put my finger on it yet. What do you guys think and am I correct in saying this is a Stainless Steel blade? Thanks Ben Quote
pcfarrar Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 What do you guys think and am I correct in saying this is a Stainless Steel blade? You are correct it looks stainless with an acid etched hamon. Quote
Weidas Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 Toyokava arsenal made, but realy poor quality koshirae... Quote
BenVK Posted April 18, 2011 Author Report Posted April 18, 2011 Is the pommel correct for a Navy sword, it's looks more like an Army version painted gold? Quote
Bruno Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 You are correct it looks stainless with an acid etched hamon. What about a more likely hamon done with stones, a kind of ha dori? Quote
pcfarrar Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 Is the pommel correct for a Navy sword, it's looks more like an Army version painted gold? It's a marine landing sword, and is quite correct. What about a more likely hamon done with stones, a kind of ha dori? Yes maybe stones but its artificial regardless. Quote
kaigunair Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 yes, and no. this is actually one of the late war versions, where they haven't really figured out if it was navy or army. TBH I'm surprised the blade is navy marked. The mounts are correct in this variation, which is army type hardware but in a navy color scheme... Quote
BenVK Posted April 18, 2011 Author Report Posted April 18, 2011 Very interesting info, thanks guys. The bottom line I guess is whether it's worth the £400 asking price? Quote
pcfarrar Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 The bottom line I guess is whether it's worth the £400 asking price? £400 is quite cheap but you would be better off spending a £1000 and getting a decent gendaito.... Quote
BenVK Posted April 18, 2011 Author Report Posted April 18, 2011 Thanks, I think the price is very reasonable but I'm going to pass on this one. It may be a mistake but I just can't get excited by a stainless steel blade and unappealing koshirae. My reasoning is probably ridiculous but there you go. Quote
gab72 Posted April 19, 2011 Report Posted April 19, 2011 Strange Koshirare yes and doubtless a stainless steel blade. Maybe this is a last navy production koshirae when there is a shortage of materials to put in sword production or maybe a post war assemblage make with different pieces from different koshirae. In anyway the price i fairly for a gunto if you looking for it, else is better hold the money for better purchase. Quote
Kiipu Posted September 13, 2023 Report Posted September 13, 2023 Oddly, the swordsmith was never mentioned. 豊佐作 = Toyosuke saku. 八一 = 81. Some of the pictures above were reposted in the thread below. Who was ToyoSuke? 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted September 13, 2023 Report Posted September 13, 2023 Ah, another duplicate number 81. I think that one came up before I was tracking numbers. Thanks Thomas. 1 Quote
