Ray Singer Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 I am at an antique show and was hoping that someone could assist with verifying this mei (I believe Goto Mitsunaga w/ Kao). Apologies in advance for the cell phone-quality photo... Thank you, Ray Quote
Surfson Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 I can find only one mitsunaga in the kinko meikan and it is a different maker. Sorry can't help. I would advise that if it's really nice, assume it's gimei and judge the price accordingly. Quote
ububob Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Does the workmanship say Goto? I can't tell from the photo. Quote
John A Stuart Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 The two Goto Mitsunaga I am sure of is Shunjo of the Hachirobei Goto and Kijo of the Hanzaemon branch who taught Ichijo. Shunjo signed using 光永 not 光長. Kao is wrong for Shunjo. Shunjo makes excellent work, as does Kijo who signed 光長, as this kozuka shows. Kao is wrong for Kijo. Does this seem like excellent Goto work for Kijo? Quote
Ray Singer Posted March 7, 2011 Author Report Posted March 7, 2011 Here are better photos of the kozuka face and mei. The quality is good, but I will need to defer to the group whether this is good enough for Goto Mitsunaga. As you can see below, there are serious condition issues. The kozuka has been remounted as a pin and the patina on the shakudo needs to be restored. Quote
John A Stuart Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 Well, Please take my opinion for what it's worth, almost nothing :| , but this is not waki Goto work and not of the quality I would associate with Kijo. John Quote
Ray Singer Posted March 7, 2011 Author Report Posted March 7, 2011 Exactly why I asked Thanks for the feedback and mei sample John. Best regards, Ray Quote
