Dotanuki became famous when they won the contest in the early Edo period as the sharpest and strongest swords in Japan. The challenge was to cut a helmet as deep as possible without damaging the blade. The famous TV samurai Kozure Okami (Itto Ogami) used a Dotanuki blade to destroy his enemies. NBTHK Hozon certified to Dotanuki. John John - yes, that would be a very bad thing to do. In this case, all you are seeing is the rust turning into a dark patina on the blade. This helps to indicate age of the blade. 3 1 Quote

Usually, but not always, if a seller does not want people sharing opinion about his listing, it is a bad sign. At least I see it that way. Not everyone here is as knowledgeable as others, thus I believe it is always important to clarify. I would agree with you but in this case someone made a misinformed statement that immediately suggested a serious problem existed on the blade.
