I'm probably mis-remembering, however wern't yasukuni smiths supposed to sign above the mekugi ana? Or was that only certain smiths?

I was thinking the same thing, John.  Plenty of examples of exactly that here:

For Onkashi-To (what this sword is faking) and other important orders, the Mei should be below the Mekugi-ana and suffixed by "Kinsaku".
