Hello everyone. I’m new to collecting and don’t know much about this style of sword. The seller calls it a “police sword” because it is a shorter blade. I’m guessing pre-WW2. But is it possible the blade is traditionally made from a Wakizashi? Or is the blade probably machine made with this style of sword? Thanks in all advance!

Hi @Jeff Simmons1012, I’m going to relocate this one to the military swords of Japan section.

This does indeed appear to be a police sword. These swords are almost always machine made, and I’ve even heard that some are not properly hardened steel.

All the best,

Jeff,

In the second photo (3 of7), it looks like the blade is threaded into the pommel of the handle. Usually this would indicate a non-traditionally made blade, as is most common in these police swords.

The emblem indicates a Police Patrolman & Sergeant sword.

Like the other guys said, if the blade were a converted waki, you would see a bamboo peg, a mekugi, through the side of the handle, holding the blade in place.  The police swords were usually shorter, like this one.  It is very uncommon to find a full-length gunto sized police sword, though they can be seen in reference books.
