Hooting Mandrills Posted April 22 Author Report Posted April 22 Hello! Looking for a bit of help/guidance on a new wakizashi I've acquired. This came from a Showa22 auction, someone who I have done some research on here and found some iffy information on. I've read that he acid etches his blades to make the hamon pop and a majority of the signed pieces are Gimei. The only reason I won the auction is because of the free returns so its somewhat of a free play. I've been into nihonto for only about 6 months now and have stuck towards buying pieces that all have NBTHK papers for peace of mind. My question for anyone who can help is; Does this signature/date look legitimate and does the kikumon look good, and has this blade specifically been acid etched. The blade is obviously old, and I've checked a few papered examples of the smith and the signatures do seem to match up decently well, but I'd love to get more options. Thanks to anyone who can give their advice, appreciate it greatly. Quote

CSM101 Posted April 22 Report Posted April 22 In the download section you can find the english Token Bijutsu. In 58/59 you can read a long article about the first and second generation. 4 Quote
Robert S Posted April 22 Report Posted April 22 It does not appear to be acid etched, but the polish is relatively crude. 3 Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted April 23 Report Posted April 23 The date seems to be 延宝八年二月吉日. I don't have much knowledge on Shintō swords and I don't study this lineage. However from the few verified signed and Enpō dated swords by the smith I would be skeptical (granted all my references found fast are katana). To me it seems in his work the kikumon is on the signature side, not on the date side. He also signed 宝 in different way in these two examples dated to that year that I found quickly. 1 Quote
