obiwanknabbe Posted January 22 Report Posted January 22 Got sent these pics by a friend. Anyone recognize the mei? Thanks in advance Quote
Toryu2020 Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 Looks like your smith is Sugawara Kanenori. Made at age 84. May have to leave the rest to others… 2 Quote
Nobody Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 The upper part of the omote side is not taken in the pictures. I guessed the untaken characters in blue font. 能登守 – Noto no kami 帝室技藝員菅原包則八十四歳作 – Made by an Imperial Household Artist Sugawara Kanenori, 84 years old. 飯野吉三郎君 – Mr. Iino Kichisaburo 君万歳 – Long live you. 大正二年十二月吉日 – Taisho 2nd year (1913), a day in 12th month FYI: 飯野吉三郎 - Wikipedia 3 Quote
obiwanknabbe Posted January 23 Author Report Posted January 23 Thanks guys! What do you think, Legit or gimei? It's a big name so there's a good chance it's faked. Then again, such an unusual shape. Quote
Lewis B Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 Ah Miyamoto Kanenori. The date and age (84) are consistent. Should be fairly easy to compare other examples. I would guess it was shoshin. 1 Quote
obiwanknabbe Posted January 24 Author Report Posted January 24 Found a few examples. Some of it looks consistent. Then again, I'm noticing some of the directions of the kanji strokes are rather different. I wonder if he had students sign his work or do the longer inscriptions as he got older. Quote
John C Posted January 24 Report Posted January 24 At 84 years old....I would probably have a stroke just signing my name. I suspect there may be some minor differences. John C. Quote
