Paul Chen perfectly legal???

Is it true that Paul Chen swords are now legal in the UK as this thread suggests?

Pirs,

the final legislation was both vague and weak. It basically added to the existing list of prohibited weapons "swords with a single edged curved blade over 50cm. long" It then added defenses alongside the already existing exemptions. These included antiques, swords for use in martial arts re-enactments etc. and some where includes the phrase made "using traditional methods". The original suggestion was "Japanese Swords made using traditional materials and methods" but the home office legal team seemed to fear this might be racist so went for the former.

As soon as this was made in to law The very websites the ban was aimed at started selling "Perfectly legal straight samurai swords".

As expected this legislation was a waste of time and has benefitted nobody. It is so vague and diluted no one can be really sure how it might be interpreted in a court.

On face value Paul Chen swords are not made using traditional material or methods for a Japanese Sword. However they could and are used in the practice of martial arts and one presumes could be legally sold and purchased for that purpose.

As you can see it is all a bit rediculous

Thanks Paul for the detailed reply. The situation is truly chaotic, but typical in a way of today's topsy turvy world. Politicians introduce so many clever-on-the-face-of-it but ill-thought-out laws, and we are all inconvenienced in the process.

Don't you just love this " Political Correct " world the simplistic individuals and nanny governments have created. Oh don't offend anyone, .... Oh please don't put this or that in our history books, .... we might offend. Circumvent the truth to be politically correct so we all live happily ever after. Yeah right, .... notice I refrained from using : Lord don't , ... or My God don't offend .... and substituted " Oh " instead. Even the word " God " is now considered Politically incorrect. Hopefully the pendulum of human intellect swings back from this arc of stupidity before we are afraid to freely speak our minds, and be responsible for our own actions but rather rely on governments to make our moral and intellectual decisions for us. This law was dumb from the start. Nothing clever about it at all.

 

It's the same as the potential British law against 'pointy' knives. There is talk of removing the sharp point from all knives to make them 'safe'.

No word of a lie.

If the lawmakers think that a non pointy knife is going to help them, maybe they should come to Hong Kong and see the damage a cleaver can do...
