Eric_P Posted October 11 Report Posted October 11 Hello Everyone, I wanted to add my recent purchase. I got this off of ebay from the son in law of a gun collector. It was listed as a "WWII NCO Sword". The price was right and I knew the fittings were special but the blade turned out to be a nice surprise. Oite Efu Chōunsai Tsunatoshi An auspicious day in February, 2nd year of Koka (1845). Thanks, Eric Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted October 11 Report Posted October 11 Really nice sword, Eric! Are you going to have the tsuka re-wrapped? Curious what causes you to call your fittings Type 94? I see the centered chuso. Are there other indications? Not arguing, just curious. Quote
Eric_P Posted October 11 Author Report Posted October 11 (edited) I may be wrong but the centered chuso, sarute barrel that is not connected to the Kabutogane, set screw in the ishizuke, and the overall quality led me to think that these are type 94. I could be wrong. I saw some discussion here about the sarute barrels so thought it may be a good reference. I will have the tsuka re-wrapped at some point still looking around for someone to do this. Thanks Edited October 11 by Eric_P 1 1 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 Nice find Eric, it has some good signs of being a Type 94. Are you able to share a photo of the Mei? Quote
Michaelr Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 Beautiful sword Eric. Nice find. Thank you for sharing MikeR Quote
Eric_P Posted October 12 Author Report Posted October 12 Here are photos of the Mei. It is quiet a light Mei, but this seems to be quite common with this maker. The hada is almost muji-hada which I think is a kantei point for this maker. It is a rather "substantial" blade in hand. I will try to post better pictures of the blade but this is still something I am learning. Thanks, Eric Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 That style looks close to his Enpo period Mei, the shape of the Nakago-jiri changed over the years as well. Worth having this looked at professionally. 1 Quote
Eric_P Posted October 12 Author Report Posted October 12 Thanks John, I will probably send this one for restoration. I may take it to the Chicago show first to have it checked out. It is a beautiful sword to see in person. It will look amazing in full polish. Thanks, Eric 1 Quote
John C Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 Looks like the thicker (11mm) pierced tsuba as well. John C. Quote

Eric_P Posted October 13 Author Report Posted October 13 (edited) Stunning sword John. That one looks impossible to upgrade. Eric Edited October 13 by Eric_P Quote
Eric_P Posted October 13 Author Report Posted October 13 I will take some measurements and a few more pictures this evening. I notice both swords also have quite long and curved tsuka. Eric Quote
Eric_P Posted October 13 Author Report Posted October 13 A question for everyone. If these are type 94 mounts would the sarute and menuki be type specific or just the standard like on a type 98? I am trying to locate parts for when I have this restored. Thanks, Eric Quote
Trenchnut Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 Eric, there are many different sarute, but the standard menuki they used on showato are almost all the same. Would recommend parts that match in colour and patina. You may try here: https://www.ebay.de/str/samuraibay?_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l170197 He doesn´t list the parts in question at the moment, but may have them in the dresser... Good luck! Quote
Rawa Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 Dunno if you want to restore it by yourself. Guess not. As you commited to put more money go a little bit more. Nice idea would be set of menuki with one having mon. And one mon is enough. Quote

Eric_P Posted October 13 Author Report Posted October 13 Thanks for the pics and info Rawa. I won't do the work myself just trying to find all the correct parts. I have been looking for a set of menuki with mon, but so far no luck. I asked the seller of the sword if he had any of the parts and he does not. The clasped hand sarute would look really nice on this sword. If anyone has any of those parts that they would sell for the restoration project please let me know. Thanks, Eric Quote
Rawa Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 @Eric_P yahoo Japan please. Just maybe pm someone for opinion before you bid. I won't propose them here. And you are USA resident, sometimes I can get the feeling that more gunto is in states then in Japan currently. Quote
