First time poster here, this is my first sword and I had some questions about the validity of it. Very new to these so i apologize for anything I missed with my pictures. I’m just worried because the edge is very flat and I can only think of someone grinding it down for safety reasons after it’s brought back, please let me know.

Edit: was able to upload most of them, sorry still new to this.

No it’s perfectly flat on the edge.

Can you take a photo of the whole blade completely out of its fittings.

The nakago says

Showa jugo-nen juni gatsu kitchi jitsu

A lucky day in December 1940 (showa 15th year)

The Smith is Take- ???

Maybe Takeyoshi but I find the wartime Kanji harder to read a lot of the time. Maybe someone can read it better

Look around the nakago (tang) are there any more marks (stamps) that were covered by the fittings

No just blank underneath

Would put my money on it being fine gendaito just in need of polish.

Even with it having a completely flat edge? It’s completely flat along the entire length.

1940 no acceptance stamps. Possible gendaito. Nicely struck mei.

Obviously if the sword is in poor condition you may not be able to see it. If you hold the sword to the light and look down the blade. Gently move it, can you see a Hamon on the blade ?

Well this is an oddity but something probably done later in its life.

Does that mean someone took the edge off here?

No way to tell. Someone could have tried to sharpen it in their shed and botched it.

Got a close-up of the edge?

Probably. There’s also swords that don’t have an edge, but those are more typically “dress” swords. Never seen a type 98 without an edge.

It’s evident that many individuals who brought swords back from the war did not carry the same respect that we might today. I’ve seen swords abused in all sorts of ways, some much worse than this. My own inherited sword, my grandpa spray painted gold .
Maybe someone, sometime in the past, decided to “make it safe”, maybe in fear that a kid in the home may mishandle it.

Looks legit to me, though.

All the best,

-Sam
