mercierarmory Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 No!!! I decided to purchase the tachi I was trying to get translated earlier this month with the extensive mei and the unthinkable happened. While it was at the packaging store ready to head my way, apparently it was "dropped" and the tsuka hit the floor. My best guess is they were holding it by the saya and it slipped out. The tsuka wasn't in the greatest condition in the first place, but there is no hope in saving it now. I will have to get a replacement made. Luckily the packing company said their insurance should cover the damage, but that is just one more thing I don't have the time to deal with right now. Mike Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 That is unfortunate, but it could have been worse - much, much worse. A tsuka is easily and fairly inexpensively remade, rewrapped, and made whole. If it would have been the other end, where the saya shattered and you lost the kissaki, that would have been the unthinkable. Quote
Jean Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 Joe is right, While very disturbing and unwelcome, I have seen worse. I remember a guy at a fair examining an Hitatsura blade from a dealer and letting it drop. Murphy's law, the edge hit the floor first .... Quote

Did the adage "You break it, you bought it" happen to that unlucky person? Quote
Jean Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 No, the sword had a few dents and he had to pay for a new polish. Hitatsura blades are so much sought after (ambokucho one) that it was sold after without any problem Quote
Stephen Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 in the condition the tsuka was in before shipping, it should have been taken off and wraped by its self and blade wrapped on its own. Quote
Logan09 Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Wow! Doesn't look like it just fell, tsuka looks like it exploded! At least it didn't fall "face first" damaging the kissaki, or breaking the tip. I had a Paul chen katana that fell out of the saya(It was to loose) and it landed on the tip breaking it off. Quote
cisco-san Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 I also remember a guy with a folded Paul Cheng Katana. His sword fall down to the floor, first with the tsuka :? but he tried to stop it with his naked leg He lost the first centimeter of his big toe But there was no flaw on the sword, except some small blood marks Quote
Jean Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 But there was no flaw on the sword, except some small blood marks you worried me on this one Quote
drbvac Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 You may in fact be better off if the insurance will pay for a new Tsuka and wrapping considering what it must have looked like prior to falling Quote
