BIG Posted January 25, 2024 Report Posted January 25, 2024 Isnt it a bargain.. https://www.bonhams....862-a-shakudo-tsuba/ Quote
Stephen Posted January 25, 2024 Report Posted January 25, 2024 I wouldn't pay opening bid but I'm not tsuba savvy. Quote
Sansei Posted January 25, 2024 Report Posted January 25, 2024 As far as pure art works, I agree with Stephen. For me something like no. 77 would be more appealing. The market for this is just tsuba collectors? https://www.bonhams.com/auction/29559/lot/77/a-lacquer-and-shibayama-inlaid-ostrich-egge Quote
Matsunoki Posted January 25, 2024 Report Posted January 25, 2024 (edited) I guess if your taste is more “purist” ie for elegant iron sukashi tsuba etc then this piece isn't your thing. Personally I see it as an exuberant and superb small Japanese work of art in mixed metals….”jewel-like” qualities. Probably made to order for a rich merchant or a flamboyant wealthy Samurai. Maybe a bit “over the top” ……but a masterful display of technical skill. I’d make space for it. Shame it’s the wrong side of the pond. PS previously offered last July by Bonhams Skinner at $8-12000!! Matsunoki Posted January 25, 2024 Report Posted January 25, 2024 Difference between “the real thing” and “school of”. I’m guessing the Bonhams one has failed shinsa. 1 Quote
