This looks a bit odd to me. Looks to be black and red lacquer with writing on it, that I won't even pretend to know what it says. The blade looks the part - shinto, maybe shinshinto - but the lacquered blade is throwing me. Can someone (or maybe Nobody) better than me give a shot at translation?

Hi Joe, I hope you mean this blade -otherwise there's more of them at the same time and that would really freak me out...

if i zoom in on the red closeups i see what looks like a foundation polish or even a window that was abandoned. Don't think that's a good sign, whatever the golden script may say. But I am very curious too so if there's anybody or nobody out there who can translate....

Greetings,

Eric.

translation:

"堪忍" : these two characters are synonyms, meaning "tolerate" or "persevere"

"不动":motionless

"明王":this is possibly a religious character of some sort.

it is a total mystery to me why anyone would paint the blade and scribble nonsense on it.

At least, the terms are not nonsense. Both are common Buddhist terms.

堪忍 (kan’nin) – forbearance

不動明王 (Fudo Myo-O) – Acala
