ilikesword Posted October 13, 2021 Report Posted October 13, 2021 Hello, Has anybody seen this type of mount? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Quote
Toryu2020 Posted October 13, 2021 Report Posted October 13, 2021 Not uncommon - Late Edo, there was a fad for these and many were made - don't think I have ever seen a really fine blade in one of these. Most often you see them done in "sheet copper" but there are high end examples that were done in silver. -tch Quote
ilikesword Posted October 13, 2021 Author Report Posted October 13, 2021 Thank you Tom! Have seen Aikuchi wakizashi size but never in Daisho mount. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted October 14, 2021 Report Posted October 14, 2021 As the above samples, they are mostly made in "sheet brass", if I remember correctly. 1 Quote
Surfson Posted October 16, 2021 Report Posted October 16, 2021 I have also been told by others that these were Meiji period for export, though they usually have older swords in them. Quote

Kanenaga Posted November 1, 2021 Report Posted November 1, 2021 I've been told this distinctive type of mounting is referred to as "Ainu" koshirae, meaning made in (lower) Japan for the Ainu market. There is a typical example on permanent display in the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno Park, labelled ":Ainu koshirae." This daisho is a particularly nice set. Quote
