Mark Green Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Hi gang. I have this set of Tsuba that I would like some help on. I'm fairly sure they are a set? Some of the zogan dots are missing, but other than that not in bad shape. Would you, that know much more than I, please help give me a clue on their orign/age. Thanks for any help. Yes the Wak Tsuba band is smaller, but it seems proportional. ?? Some zogan dots, some silver? Mark G Quote

Brian Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 I'm working on adsl, but then it will be even more critical as I'll be on a 2 or 3 gig monthly cap SA...gotta love it, or just go insane  I am not sure if these are Bushu or Choshu. Still trying to learn the kantei points to differentiate. I would expect Mid Edo. Choshu? Brian Quote
docliss Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 It is very difficult to distinguish between Bushū and Chōshū work. The middle of the Edo period saw a large Bushū influence on the Chōshū style and, by the end of the Edo period the former had completely dominated the latter. The black coloration of Chōshū iron is probably the most obvious defining characteristic of the school’s work at this stage but, unfortunately, the color of Marc’s (upside-down) photographs does not make this distinction easy. Like Brian, I agree that they are probably fairly ordinary, C18 Chōshū work. But are they a true daishō pair, I wonder …. John L. Quote
Mark Green Posted January 28, 2009 Author Report Posted January 28, 2009 Thanks guys, What would be a true Daisho set? Tsuba made just for the that reason? Mark G Quote
Brian Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 Mark, Tsuba made by the same school at the same time as a pair. I can't be certain, but I see what Dr L. is getting at. Although exactly the same theme, and made from the same pattern book, the rims and overall look are different. One looks chunkier and with a thicker rim. Could be that they are made at different times and later paired up. Try a pic outside some time with natural light. Brian Quote
Guido Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 ... Bro ...Are you Maori?"Bro" is slang for friend and / or brother. Mainly used by New Zealand Maori, surfers, frat guys, and people mocking surfers and frat guys. Apparently first noted in a 1968 edition of Current Slang, the word has come a long way from its original expression of black unity, and now GQ calls "bro" the "most grating, embarrassing word a guy can use. Ford Hallam Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 Whoa!...bummer Dude! hey Mark...you've been "owned" Quote
Mark Green Posted January 28, 2009 Author Report Posted January 28, 2009 Whoa! I guess I am owned. I guess I'm just Maori at heart. 80% of my friends are 'Brothers of the Sword'. Sword/gun collectors, or full contact, midieval, sword fighters. I call my good fiends "Bro" as a short for brother, in the Maori way. I feel the people on this list are Brothers of the sword as well, so in love, and brotherhood, I call ya'll "Bro". I have never been very GQ, unless you count my 14thC garb I put on for SCA events. So, if I call you "Bro", know that is in the Maori way. Love Ya'll Mark G Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 Hi Mark, Great photo, of course your Lady makes the picture. I used to hunt black bear and grizzly a bit when in Alberta and wonder about the tooth you have as pendant. Black bear? I've met SCA devotees as far away as Hong Kong and am amazed at the dedication of most, a true Brother/Sisterhood. It is too bad Samurai and Nihonto are just a little too anachronistic to mesh with SCA events. John Quote
Mark Green Posted January 28, 2009 Author Report Posted January 28, 2009 It is a wolf k9. For years, I commanded a fighter household called the "Hell Hounds". A dozen hockey/rugby, players, allowed to hit people with ratan swords. With no penalty box When you became a hell hound, you got a wolf tooth. And I do play Samurai at war about 1/2 the time. There are some huge Samurai Households in the SCA. Sorry Brian, People can write me for more info dgreen7@bellsouth.net Quote
