Promo Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 This one was very special to me. Not only the Koshirae was wonderful to look at with carps as an overall theme, but I also highly enjoyed the naginata shape with the hi. 1 Quote
Promo Posted July 28, 2021 Author Report Posted July 28, 2021 Additional pictures. Very keen to learn on what the signature on this one reads! 2 Quote
Promo Posted July 28, 2021 Author Report Posted July 28, 2021 Well, it seems that I really liked this one very much since I took so many pictures of it that I have to do three posts to include all of them. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 The mei is, I believe, Masatoshi. Grey Quote
Geraint Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 Hi Georg. Not naginata naoshi but a standard hira zukuri ko wakizashi, assuming that it is more than 30 cms nagasa. I can see why you like the koshirae. All the best. Quote
Promo Posted July 30, 2021 Author Report Posted July 30, 2021 @Grey Doffin, thanks for the translation! Would you mind telling me which Masatoshi this is? I got several results for smiths with this name, hence my question. @Geraint, the koshirae is very cool to look at, especially since additionally painted on. Re the length, for what I remember this one was slightly above 30cm, so very short. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted July 30, 2021 Report Posted July 30, 2021 Hi Georg, No idea which smith signing with these characters for Masatoshi this is; sorry. I do know that he isn't found in any of the references included in The Index of Japanese Sword Literature, so, short of a shinsa and I wouldn't expect much from that, you won't be able to learn much. Jussi Ekholm Posted July 31, 2021 Report Posted July 31, 2021 Very interesting item Georg, I would think it might be late Muromachi Masatoshi 政俊 who has been listed as Odawara-Sōshū smith. I think the 2 generations worked roughly between 1550 and 1600. Here is one reference item: https://tokka.biz/sword/masatoshi2.html 1 Quote
