Iron Tsuba, Yatsuhashi Theme

Recommended Posts

Offered here is an iron tsuba with the Yatsuhashi theme from the Tales of Ise.  Measurements are 6.8 cm x 4.5mm.  The tsuba features kebori in a linear fashion, tracing the form of the bridge planks, with the kebori being punctuation by "wormhole" marks.  This expression is reminiscent of Owari Sadahiro aesthetic sensibilities, but the ji-sukashi form of the guard would be a significant departure from Sadahiro work, as would the fact that it is unsigned.  The facing of the rim is enhanced with a kebori groove that adds depth and texture to the piece.  The rather stark layout of the design results in a boldness that belies its modest dimensions.  Condition is excellent overall.  Comes with a box that labels the tsuba as "Kyo-Sukashi," but I think it presents more of an Umetada expression than Kyo.  I would place this work in the early-Edo Period.  $450.
