Jwrussell Posted April 16, 2021 Report Posted April 16, 2021 Can anyone point me in the direction of some Katana Kake options? I'm looking for something with some...je ne sai quoi. Preferably for multiple swords. I would prefer antique, but I'm not sure I'm willing to pay the money for that at the moment. It would depend on the item. Ideally I would like to stay around the $200 mark, but I'm somewhat flexible depending on the item. Trying to avoid shipping from Japan, but it's not out of the question. Figured I would ask here about state-side options first. Quote
francois2605 Posted April 16, 2021 Report Posted April 16, 2021 Have you considered buying directly from Japan (via Buyee / Jauce) ? Here's the search url for katana-kake (that another NMB member (maybe Curran) gave a while ago and that I bookmarked): https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/search/search?p=刀掛け&va=刀掛け&exflg=1&b=1&n=100&s1=bids&o1=a&mode=1 You'll see tons of nice things. I once bought a katanakake from a french seller only to discover a week later than tons of similar (or better !) items were on sale for less money on Yahoo auctions. I think you should find what you want if you're patient enough. Here's one I bought for about 100 euros via Buyee. Quote
Jwrussell Posted April 16, 2021 Author Report Posted April 16, 2021 Hmmm, thanks Francois. I did consider it, but honestly not being able to read the language I am hesitant to go that route. I can of course find something that looks nice, but beyond Google Translate I'm not going to have much of an idea of what I'm seeing when it comes to descriptions, caveats, "small print" etc. Still, I'll take a look. Thanks. Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 17, 2021 Report Posted April 17, 2021 Being in Florida, you have t o prepare for high humidity, as I do in Hawaii. Koshirae aren't intended for long-term storage, & although shirasaya will afford more protection, a katanadansu is what protects my collection. Look for something like this: https://www.Japanese-vintage.org/katana-dansu-1830 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 17, 2021 Report Posted April 17, 2021 Good point about Florida, Ken, but you surely want to display occasionally (in an air-conditioned room) for your own satisfaction over your evening drink, or when you have guests. Quote

Exactly, Piers. Also, I will be displaying Koshirae on the Kake. Quote
Jwrussell Posted April 17, 2021 Author Report Posted April 17, 2021 Question regarding the katana dansu/tansu. What differentiates them from standard isho dansu? I’m guessing mainly dimensions of the drawers? Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 18, 2021 Report Posted April 18, 2021 Jason, they do come in all shapes, but whereas ordinary clothes chests tend to have larger bulkier dimensions all round, katana-dansu have a longer narrower and less deep profile, and they usually have sets of rests inside. 1 Quote
