Infinite_Wisdumb Posted March 1, 2021 Report Posted March 1, 2021 Hi everyone! Recently purchased this one from a board member. Curious if I am on target for era/School on it - Momoyama/Heianjo 1 Quote
Geraint Posted March 1, 2021 Report Posted March 1, 2021 Dear Jesse. Not all brass inlay is Heianjo. All the best. 1 1 Quote
Infinite_Wisdumb Posted March 2, 2021 Author Report Posted March 2, 2021 Thanks @Geraint! So I may still be correct in my musings or incorrect (as I often am)! Any other thoughts from the collective? Quote
Brian Posted March 2, 2021 Report Posted March 2, 2021 No ways is this early. Late Eo maybe. The steel is faily flat and homogenous. As such, I am not sure it fits into an exact school. 1 Quote

I was digging around and found this, the cricket is the same and the sukashi also similar. https://varshavskycollection.com/collection/tsu-0283/ Quote
Geraint Posted March 2, 2021 Report Posted March 2, 2021 Dear Jesse. Similar is the operative word here, yes the cricket is the same in that it is a cricket, or whatever the Japanese equivalent is, but look at the treatment of the legs and the quality of work in the body. Also note Brian's comment about the quality of the plate and finally take note of the dimensions of the papered one in the Varshavsky collection, especially the thickness. If you want to go a bit deeper then imagine the Varshavsky tsuba without the brass decoration and also without the kodzuka hitsu. The reason this hobby is so compelling it that there is always more to learn. Have fun! All the best. 2 Quote
Infinite_Wisdumb Posted March 2, 2021 Author Report Posted March 2, 2021 Thanks @Geraint! Agree on the texture, need to check the thickness. Learning curve is steep for this plebe! Quote
Geraint Posted March 2, 2021 Report Posted March 2, 2021 That curve never gets flatter! All the best. Quote
PietroParis Posted March 2, 2021 Report Posted March 2, 2021 A naive question: is the rugged texture of the steel in the Varshavsky tsuba an intended effect, rather than the result of corrosion? Quote
