FBFCoconut Posted April 13, 2020 Report Posted April 13, 2020 Hello Everyone, New to the art of Japanese Swords/Tsuba and just came into possession of one. New to the forum here so please forgive my ignorance. Curious to know if anyone can help me with the following: 1) Identification of the engravings (both front and back) 2) Idea of when it was made 3) Any further information of the maker (assuming we can identity via the engravings) 4) Thoughts on its authenticity (i.e. is is real). I guess this is the most important question... My apologies for the photos being flipped 90 degrees, I cant get them to upload in the correct orientation. Thanks in advance for your reply and I look forward to finding out more about this piece. - Lance M. Quote

uwe Posted April 13, 2020 Report Posted April 13, 2020 “國廣“ (Kunihiro) at first glance. Need a little for the other side..... Quote
Geraint Posted April 13, 2020 Report Posted April 13, 2020 Welcome Lance. As has already been said the two character mei is Kunihiro, a name often seen on plain iron tsuba and although I have not looked into it in any detail it seems that this might be a studio name rather than an individual as there are so many of them. However, the decoration is not typical and looks to owe more to the late tsuba makers so this is possibly an original but rather plain tsuba, (though the mimi or edge treatment is nice), that has been decorated by another artist. Can't make out the smaller mei yet but I am sure someone will, perhaps the name of the decorator. All the best. Quote
