Totoro945 Posted October 8, 2019 Report Posted October 8, 2019 Hi, Recently purchased from Japan. Advertised as 17-18th century Oribe ware, which I do not think realistic, but it was rather cheap and the colors are just great, different hues of green, blue, brown, white and yellow. Worth using for sake anyway. It came in a vintage looking box wrapped in old paper, but I am not sure if it is original to the cup, maybe just used for storage. So, what do you think is this. Looks old, but how old? Thank you, Vadim 1 Quote
Fuuten Posted October 8, 2019 Report Posted October 8, 2019 (edited) I want to keep it short. Post photo of the box as well. Cup might be old, 100? Check carefully for ships or cracks. Other than that nice cup. Fwiw; looks like Mino ware, shino type ash (feltspar), glazing. Clay doesn't tell me much. Rinse it first as these glazes can trap materials inside and this cup has definately seen use (which is in no way a bad thing/sometimes even preferred). Edited October 8, 2019 by Fuuten 1 Quote
PietroParis Posted October 8, 2019 Report Posted October 8, 2019 I suppose it is this one, right? I have just bought an affordable chawan from the same dealer and I am eagerly waiting to receive it, hoping it will dispel that nagging "too good to be true" feeling... Cheers, Pietro 1 Quote
Totoro945 Posted October 8, 2019 Author Report Posted October 8, 2019 Yes, it is the one This is the first time I use this dealer, so not sure how reliable are his descriptions. But I really like this cup anyway, it looks better and more colorful in real life, and his pricing is not bad. 1 Quote
Totoro945 Posted October 8, 2019 Author Report Posted October 8, 2019 I do not see any cracks, but it looks heavily used with a lot of micro scratches and some small chips in glazing, nothing bad though. And this is the box. Quote
SteveM Posted October 8, 2019 Report Posted October 8, 2019 The paper comes from before the war. It has the name and address of a newspaper on it, and the newspaper was merged with another newspaper and changed names in late 1941 松陽新報 島根県簸川郡出西村大字求院 出雲国直江向下 大字求院 Shōyō Shinpō (← name of newspaper) (everything that follows the newspaper name is an address, located in Shimane prefecture) Shimane-ken Hikawa-gun Shussai-mura Ōaza-Gui Izumo-kuni Naoe mukaishimo Ōaza Gui 3 Quote
Totoro945 Posted October 8, 2019 Author Report Posted October 8, 2019 Wow! This is becoming even more interesting. So, I guess, this cup was sitting in the box for at least 80 years or more. Quote
