Randal Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 Hello, I'm a new member to this forum. It was recomended by a fellow collector. I mainly collect TR edged weapons, but I have picked up several Japanese swords over the years. I'm looking for any info I can on a wakazashi I have. The blade is 23"7/8 overall. The edge is 18"1/8. Tip of the blade to top of the pommel is 25"1/4. As you can see the handle wrap is in rough shape. The blade is still nice. All the fittings are iron with inlays. The utility knife is missing. Any opinions or info would be appreciated. Randal Quote
Jean Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 Randal, Nothing can be say with these pictures. Need Close-up pictures of the tang, the kissahi (blade point) of the star of the cutting edge .... Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 Randal, looking at the badly-deteriorated tsuka isn't going to help much, nor are shots of the other furniture. Can you please post a full-length shot of the blade, along with some detailed (i.e., close-up & in-focus) shots of the entire nagasa? The kissaki & boshi are particularly important. It's the details in the blade workmanship that will help us to help you identify your wakizashi! Quote
Randal Posted August 10, 2008 Author Report Posted August 10, 2008 Ken I'm sorry for the bad pics. I hope these are a little better. Quote
remzy Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 Hello, you might want to stop putting your nihonto on metal object such as coins and metal racks, try using tissues or pillows if you need to raise it to an angle as these will not cause potential scratch on the finish. Quote
takakage Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 Hello, the nakago jiri looks like shinto mizuta school, the hamon seems nie deki and wide notare/gunome. semms to be a nice sword Quote
Brian Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 I have recently acquired a suriage sword that is signed to the Mizuka school and so have done some reading up on it to see if mine is gimei or not. This sword here does bear some close resemblance to the Mizuta school from what I have read and seen, so I agree. I would go with Shinto on it, although the school is just a guess for now. Looks worth taking care of and possibly getting it put into shirasaya or having the mounts fixed. Brian Quote
Randal Posted August 19, 2008 Author Report Posted August 19, 2008 I would like to thank everyone for the info. Although it is a little over my head. I was thinking of sending it to Tom Buck at Tsukamaki Restoration Services to have the handle repaired. Thanks Again. Randal. Quote
