zanilu Posted October 18, 2018 Report Posted October 18, 2018 Dear all I have recently acquired a ten-zogan Onin tsuba. The tsuba comes in a kiri box with Hako-Gaki. Hand written kanji is, unfortunately, well beyond my ability to translate. I can manage, with great difficulty, the translation of printed Japanese but this... Here are the pictures of tsuba and box: If you are so kind as to add also the kanji to the translation it will be great to have a comparison just to get an eye to it! Thank you in advance Best Regards Luca 1 Quote
myochin Posted October 18, 2018 Report Posted October 18, 2018 Luca, It would seem that this hako-gaki was done by Torigoe San. The square red seal could mean that it was authenticatd in Japan The bird-style kaô with (what I believe to be ) '2 ticks' means that it is a 2nd class pre-Edo item You can find more information in the Haynes Auction Catalogue #7 Paul 1 Quote

Surfson Posted October 19, 2018 Report Posted October 19, 2018 Just have to guess that it says Onin tsuba! Quote
SteveM Posted October 19, 2018 Report Posted October 19, 2018 Top of the lid says, as you guessed, 応仁点象嵌 Ōnin ten zōgan First line (far right) of the inside of the lid of the box says the same thing (with the addition of the word tsuba 鐔) The next three lines describe the tsuba, but I can't read them, just a word here and there. Second to the last line is a date, 昭和廿? Shōwa 20-something. Something month, 20-something day. Sorry I can't fill in the bits. 1 Quote
zanilu Posted October 19, 2018 Author Report Posted October 19, 2018 Thank you Steve your bits are extremely helpful. I am abroad now. When I come back I will try to look more closely into it. Luca Quote
yogoro Posted October 19, 2018 Report Posted October 19, 2018 Last line is go of Torigoye Kazutaro "Sodo" and the bird-style kaô with two ticks - second class pre-Edo item. Quote
Surfson Posted October 19, 2018 Report Posted October 19, 2018 By the way, I quite like the tsuba! Quote
